Rival 38501W 5 Qt. Programmable Round Crock PotStrengths: nice looking, ceramic pot interior comes out to store items in fridge or serve on table Weakness: It cooks TOO hot--doesn't work! I have tried this over and over, and each time it overcooks my food! After the first 3 times I called the company to complain. They recommended that I either cook it for a shorter period of time (2-4 hours on hot) or add more liquid. I've done both and neither have worked. I have asked friends who have other slow-cookers and they say their cookers do not do that. I can't tell you how frustrating it is to get it prepped in the morning, go to work, and expect to come home to a nice dinner. Instead, each and every time, my meal has been burned and the meat tasteless! DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT! After reading the other reviews, I am going to call the company again and ask for my money back! 100% of readers found this review helpful. Did you find it helpful or unhelpful? Top

Fire and Burn Hazard!!Strengths: Cooks quickly if that's what you are looking for Weakness: gets too hot and will even burn your fingers if you touch outside of it, bowl cracked due to heat I was very excited when my husband gave this crockpot to me as a gift. It is the silver model that just came out this year (2010). However, the first time we used it I ended up burning my hand on the outside of it because it was SO hot. It completely cooks our food in less than 2-3 hours (thankfully I am a stay at home mom or I wouldn't leave it on while I was gone!) and I just noticed today that the bowl is cracked along the bottom! I decided to use it today just to make sure that it was indeed a crack and now the bottom is spiderwebbed. We haven't dropped it, hit it on anything, etc. and I'm almost positive that it is cracked from the excessive heat. 100% of readers found this review helpful. Did you find it helpful or unhelpful? Rival 38501W 5 Qt. Programmable Round Crock PotStrengths: Great looking. The warm setting is neat. Weakness: The lid is not heavy enough The lid is not heavy enough to hold the liquid inside the pot. I have burned every meal I have cooked in it. I even tried putting double the amount of liquid that the reciped calls for and it still burns it. The low setting is more like medium so it just boils it out. I tried contacting the company to get and replacement lid and I have heard nothing. 98% of readers found this review helpful. Rival 38501W 5 Qt. Programmable Round Crock PotStrengths: It's attractive, the "warm" feature is nice. Weakness: TOO HOT! This isn't a crockpot--it's a simmerpot. I've tried all sorts of recipes in the 4 months I've had this, and they all cook way too fast at too high a temperature. I put chicken in just last night before I went to work, and when I got home the meat was so overcooked that it was tasteless. 94% of readers found this review helpful. Don't waste your Money!!!Strengths: I like that it is programmable and it is attractive Weakness: HOT, HOTTER, HOTTEST ......BURNS ALL THE MEALS This crockpot has ruined every meal I have put in it. What good is a crockpot when you come home from work for dinner and it is burnt. I'm tired of calling for pizza delivery. I am returning this and getting a different brand crockpot! 92% of readers found this review helpful. Did you find it helpful or unhelpful? Top

Cooks waaaayyyyy too hot!!!!Strengths: The inner pot is removable; makes it easy to clean. Weakness: Cooks food too hot and too fast. This thing got so hot that it warped and broke the washer to the handle within a matter of months. We thought it was us so we tried cooking on low/10 hrs. with more liquid and the food was still over cooked and would even boil over. With all the bad reviews I'm finding on this model I'm surprised that they haven't recalled it. I really wish I hadn't gotten ride of our smaller crock. 89% of readers found this review helpful. Aug 16, 2006 I have had the same problem with my unit. Foods all boil and burn in less than half the recommended cooking time. You cannot leave it alone because it can be dangerous. I have never had this problem with any other crock pot but am thinking of buying a different brand from now on. I have heard another model from this manufacturer also burns the meals. Would not recommend at all.

Nov 1, 2007 I'm so glad that I read these reviews. I was beginning to think it was me! Things with lots of liquid fared better than those with very little liquid, but everything was done or overdone way earlier than they should have been. I attributed it to the lid not being snug, which must contribute to the problem of dried and burnt food. After reading these reviews, however, I also know that the lovely crockpot on my counter just CAN'T cook on low. Guess it's not so "Smart" after all.

Rival 38501W 5 Qt. Programmable Round Crock PotStrengths: It is so easy to program and is always accurate for timing & temperature. Food never burns or overcooks. Weakness: It can't be set to warm manually. I have the 6qt. cooker. The original one I purchased had an electrical problem. The company replaced it immediately. The replacement has worked perfectly. It does brown some at the top level of the food but this can be solved by using a little oil or spray around the top area. This is the best slower cooker I have ever had. 83% of readers found this review helpful. Did you find it helpful or unhelpful? Top

Burn Pot!Strengths: NONE Weakness: BURNS EVERYTHING This crock pot is terrible. Don't waste your money. Even if you disregard the recipe and cook everything on 10 hour / lowest setting, it will burn and dry out your food in just a few hours. 67% of readers found this review helpful. kamsndStrengths: I like the size Weakness: Burns everything I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with these complaints. When I contacted Rival they blew me off like I was the only one with this problem, and would not due anything about it as I didn't have the box. Who saves all their boxes. So I have this new crock-pot I never use unless I'm going to be home, kind of defeats the purpose of having it. 67% of readers found this review helpful. Did you find it helpful or unhelpful? Top

Worst crockpot I've owned.Strengths: Nice Looking. Weakness: Cooks way too hot. It can't be set to warm manually. Most foods boil on the LOW setting...and even in the "warm" setting. I can't believe this product passed Rival's quality control. I took it back and got a second one with the EXACT same results. 67% of readers found this review helpful. Not a Good Choice!!Strengths: Good size Weakness: Burns everything! The first time I used this I turned it on in the morning and went to work. Lid bounces, scares dogStrengths: Good size, easy to clean. Weakness: Lid bounces up and down. Until reading the above comments I did not realize this pot was cooking too hot, however I'm home all day and can stop cooker whenever I feel the food is ready. But with the lid bouncing, it has scared my little dog so much that he will not come in the house until bed time, even tho' I've finished cooking and put the pot away several hours before. I'm now looking for another crock pot so my little house dog does not have to sit out in the rain when I cook. Other than the dog situation, I have no complaints about the pot. I agree. My crock pot boiled food so hard the lid was shaking and within 3 hours all the liquid boiled out. Good thing I was home, it probably would have caught on fire. I called the company and they said they would send me a new crock pot. Well, it never came. I'm trying to find a different brand to buy.

I also had the same problem. Even set on 10 hours, the food was cooked and boiling after 4!
Feb 28, 2006
Yes it is too hot, besides the fact that Rival does not have replacement parts, my lid shattered and I was unable to replace it even though they have it shown on their website......Don't buy this product.

Disappointing product. Food burns easily. The lid rattles which is very annoying. Can only cook on high or low. If it wasn't a gift from a close friend, I would have returned it.

I also have to say that I've had similar problems so it's reassuring to find out it's not just me and worth getting another crockpot. Any suggestions for a better model
