An easy to use self contained recorder

Strengths: Simple to use. Small and unobtrusive. Very versatile.

Weakness: External microphone input produces very low volume regardless of settings.

This new recorder is about the size of a pack of cigarettes. The built in mics (4!) render very good sound from both front and rear. The programs are much easier to
manipulate compared to the Zoom H4 recorder. With a 2 gigabyte chip you can record in excellent fidelity for over two hours. The only drawback is the external mic input. Sound volume is too low when using an external
stereo microphone. This is moot if you use the internal
microphones which seem better than those in the H4.

Great Piece Of Technology

Strengths: The Zoom H2 Handy Recorder is well built. The recorded sound is crystal clear. It has a built-in instrument tuner and metronome. It comes with lots of goodies in the box.

Weakness: The view screen is kind of small, but it is readable. I tried to come up with a weakness.

You can connect this device to your stereo, so you can record your cassette or open-reel taped music to it, in wav or MP3 format. The taped music can be transferred to your computer (via USB cable), then it can be burned onto CD's, DVD's or loaded into your MP3 player. The sound quality is fantastic. You should purchase a 2GB memory card; I found a PNY 2MB SD card for $19.99....search around. The H2 is fairly easy to operate. This is a great piece of technology. Buy it.

Zoom H2

Strengths: Its size is an asset. Small enough to be useful, portable--but large enough to be able to view the various icons, etc. It is one of the few affordable recorders for voice/band/orchestra.

Weakness: It's a bit hard to understand because it has SO many features. I would have prefered it to be a little simpler to operate and play back.

I think with a short period of practice I will be able to master this. It came highly recommended by a friend who uses it to record vocals, and my experience with it so far (recording a 50 voice chorus) have been very positive.

It's really handy

Strengths: awesome quality of recordings, small and handy

Weakness: expensive, no speaker

I needed a good recorder for podcasting. And this one just fits to my needs. The only thing is missing external speaker. You have to use included earphones. Overall, it's not cheap, but worth its price.

Fantastic value with surround sound recording as a...

Strengths: Compact, easy to use, surround sound recording for under $200. Everything you need is included in the box.

Weakness: Plastic - would break easily. Buttons feel a bit cheap.

Bought this as a backup recording device for my Fostex MR8-HD hard drive recorder when recording live, one-time-only concerts of local wind bands and orchestras (side business). Very easy to set up on another mic stand and get it started before the concert. Picked up some cheap 4GB SDHC cards for plenty of recording time.

Have not yet critically compared the sound with my main setup (using Crown SASS stereo mic with separate low-noise preamp into the Fostex). But for the money, it can't be beat! I have used an M-Audio Microtrack as a backup, but using the extra output on my preamp to feed it instead of the small Sony stereo mic I bought for it.

The H2 is just way more versatile! The ability to experiment with making Dolby Surround recording was the extra push I needed to pick this up. So far, very happy.
